Are you ready for this?
I’m so excited to announce that I’m re-editing/re-writing Higher Honor! This decision came after talking with my publisher, the awesome Vickie McEntire at Colorful Crow Publishing, and a few of my spiritual confidants. So I’m busy editing and rewriting.
The good news is, the story is still solid. I’ve always had confidence that it was a good story that encompasses timeless topics of loyalty and honor. For those who haven’t read it, Higher Honor is the story of four friends their senior year at a military college whose friendship and faith are challenged when one is sexually assaulted. It’s a unique setting only braved by a few writers but magnifies honor, loyalty, and resilience as young adults grapple with what those words mean and how to apply them in extreme circumstances. Added to the mix is they are young adults, lacking much experience in the trauma of life. And then, we add faith in Jesus. It isn’t always a pretty faith, or a comfortable faith.
Salvation brings…well, salvation. There is no magic healing or curing of the injustices the characters face. The changes aren’t always immediate and even when they are quick, the consequences of their previous lives emerge.
If the story is that good, what am I changing exactly?
Good question. I’m not the writer or the believer I was 13 years ago. I’ve grown in both and praise Jesus, I’m better (most days) than the writer of two decades ago, wrestling with where is God when bad things happen? I started writing Higher Honor as a nonbeliever. I stalled out around page 110. But I believed in the story. Even after giving my life to Christ, I didn’t give Him Higher Honor. BTW, THAT version of Higher Honor was much darker. It was the desperate, unheard cry of a soul destroyed by trauma.
When I got it through my thick skull that this story should be my gift to the Most High, a small sacrifice, and I should glorify Him with my words, the rest of the manuscript fell into place so easily. Now, I’m offering a more polished sacrifice.
Oh, and I’m updating some Army things. I mean, they’ve changed uniforms a time or two and don’t even get me started on the blasted PT test.
